In my experience, the life of a writer isn’t glamorous, but then again, I’m no Poppy Parnell, Hilde Lisko or Alex Levy (or Bradley Jackson, for that matter).

These are the leading ladies of three of my favorite shows streaming on Apple TV+. Each series chronicles the lives of journalists who will do whatever it takes to chase the story and uncover the truth.

Note: There may be minor spoilers in the synopses below.

Truth Be Told

Played by Octavia Spencer, Poppy Parnell is a former New York Times reporter turned true crime podcaster investigating murders in Truth Be Told. Season 1 debuted in late 2019, and chronicles Poppy’s search to determine whether her investigative reporting at the NYT helped put the wrong man behind bars.

Season 2, which just dropped in August 2021, introduces a new story and, with it, a new leading castmate: Kate Hudson, who plays Poppy’s childhood friend Micah Keith. This time, we follow Poppy’s investigation into a shocking death that hits close to home.

At the time of writing, only four episodes of Season 2 were live, with new episodes airing every Friday.

Home Before Dark

In what has become one of my favorite binge-worthy series of the year, Home Before Dark tells the story of 9-year-old reporter Hilde Lisko (played by Brooklynn Prince), who’s on a quest to solve the mystery of a missing person from her father’s past. In the process, she unravels a thread of lies and cover-ups that she believes contributed to her “Pop Pop’s” Alzheimer’s.

Besides the fact that Hilde is portrayed as an unapologetic badass (whose fearlessness is something we can all learn from), what makes this Nancy Drew-esque mystery drama even better is that it was inspired by a true story – that of a young girl named Hilde Lysiak.

Two full seasons of Home Before Dark are available, and if we’re lucky, there will be a third in the near future.

The Morning Show

Last, but certainly not least, is The Morning Show, in which the news of co-anchor Mitch Kessler’s (Steve Carell) sexual harassment takes center stage, leaving fellow co-anchor Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) grappling with the truth and clinging to what’s left of her career.

In an unexpected and unlikely break, spunky southern reporter Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) soon joins the morning news show at the fictional network UBA.

Season 1 – the only season currently available – shines a spotlight on the lives and loves of the morning show’s employees, and the cutthroat and fast-paced world of morning news. Season 2 is set to release on Sept. 17, 2021.

These shows are sure to strike a chord with journalists, storytellers and content creators, but I would also recommend them to anyone looking for a new binge-worthy series to add to their watch list!
